As well as this, the Snicket siblings were abducted by Volunteers at a very young age, and Lemony at least believes his parents to have known the abduction would happen. The canon family tree shows a key with V reading Volunteer- (the rest is cut off), implying that VFD is important enough to the Snicket family to be included on the tree. They seem to be a fully VFD-affiliated family. It is said that it is a family tradition to name children after the deceased. Though the Netflix series chose to portray Dewey as unambiguously the father, the series' canon is separate from book canon and thus cannot count as confirmation.
